Sloukas snubbed from EuroLeague All-Decade Team

Despite winning three EuroLeague titles in the space of the last decade with Olympiacos and Fenerbahce, Kostas Sloukas was snubbed from the EuroLeague’s All-Decade Team.

Earlier this week, Vassilis Spanoulis was named the final member of the EuroLeague All-Decade Team as EuroLeague Basketball wrapped up its review of the best players of the past ten years.

While it was no surprise to see Spanoulis named as the overwhelming favourite in a list of ten players that features eight guards, it was quite a big shock that one of Spanoulis’ former teammates didn’t make the list.

Despite his exploits for both Olympiacos and Fenerbahce, Kostas Sloukas was left out of the All-Decade Team as the Greek guard is one of the major snubs despite picking up three EuroLeague titles in a leading role over the past decade.

Sloukas started the decade on loan at Aris, but returned to Piraeus for the start of the 2011/2012 season, just in time to help the Erythrolefki win back-to-back EuroLeague titles in 2012 and 2013.

With Olympiacos, Sloukas returned to the EuroLeague Final in 2015 as Olympiacos fell short of a third title in four years.

Moving on to Fenerbahce that same summer, Sloukas would help guide the Turkish club to its first EuroLeague title in 2017. Sloukas was again a focal point the following season as Fenerbahce aimed to defend their crown but fell just short in the Final against Real Madrid.

Sloukas’ track record of making the EuroLeague Final Four a whopping seven times in the past decade, including five appearances in the Final, is enough to suggest to that the 30-year-old Greek international should’ve been named to the All-Decade Team.

Although the likes of Luka Doncic and Bogdan Bogdanovic enjoyed incredible stints in the EuroLeague before moving to the NBA, what Sloukas was able to achieve over the past decade suggests that he should have been slotted in the team ahead of the NBA duo.

Similarly, Sergio Rodriguez is another high-profile snub after the Spaniard made six appearances in the EuroLeague Final Four with Real Madrid and CSKA Moscow over the past decade.
