Sokratis scores as Arsenal defeat BATE

In London, Greek centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos helped Arsenal progress in the UEFA Europa League, scoring his team’s third goal in a 3:0 beating of BATE Borisov.

The commanding 30-year-old defender, who was returning from injury, scoring a mere four minutes after entering proceedings as a substitute in the second half. With Arsenal leading 2:0 at the time, Papastathopoulos connected with Granit Xhaka’s corner from the right flank, planting a firm header into the net with BATE goalkeeper Denis Scherbitsky flapping. Arsenal saw out the match to win 3:0 and advance to the Last 16 of the Europa League 3:1 on aggregate.

So far, Papastathopoulos has made 25 appearances for Arsenal across all competitions in the current campaign, popping up with two goals and two assists. Incidentally, both of the Greek international’s goals have come in the Europa League, with the first having been scored in a 3:0 victory against Qarabag in early October.
