Super League and Vassiliadis fail to reach compromise in Monday meeting

The uncertainty surrounding the Super League continues, as the organisation and Deputy Greek Minister of Culture and Sport George Vassiliadis failed to reach an agreement concerning the structure of the championship.

As previously reported on AGONAsport, Super League clubs unanimously voted in favour of having 16 teams in the 2018/2019 season, before the amount of participants is reduced to 14 for the 2019/2020 campaign. After the vote, a meeting was organised with George Vassiliadis for Monday, but the parties couldn’t find common ground.

In order to give the Super League a huge shake-up and change the broadcasting rights situation, Vassiliadis wants to cut the number of teams competing in the tournament to 12 ahead of 2019/2020, but the clubs do not support his idea. Instead, teams want to have 14 clubs participating in the 2019/2020 Super League, a proposal which Vassiliadis is categorically against. According to the Greek media, Vassiliadis stated these following words: “There is no chance of having 14 teams in the Super League, so there’s no reason to discuss it.”

Nevertheless, newly installed Super League president Evangelos Batagiannis felt that the meeting was positive, with a productive, albeit unsuccessful, dialogue taking place. However, taking into account the stubbornness from both sides and the lack of desire to strike a compromise, it seems no solution to the problem is coming soon.

While it’s practically certain that 16 teams will play in the 2018/2019 Super League, the calendar is yet to be drawn up and several clubs are still without television deals. More negotiations are scheduled to occur in the near future with a new Super League board set to be formed.
