Since the 2017/2018 season ended, the future of the Super League has hung in the balance, as the organisation have engaged in a conflict with Deputy Greek Minister of Culture and Sport George Vassiliadis. While it’s certain that 16 teams will participate in the 2018/2019 edition, the Super League wants to reduce the amount of competing clubs to 14 next year, however Vassiliadis is eager for the participant list to be immediately cut to 12. There has been little sign of a compromise on either side and the spat is threatening to delay the start of the upcoming season, which is due to begin on August 25.

Additionally, no solution has yet been found for the chaos connected with broadcasting contracts. At this moment in time, seven of the 16 Super League clubs are still without a television deal for the 2018/2019 campaign, and the affected teams are threatening to prevent the season from starting on time if the mess isn’t resolved.

Nevertheless, despite the ongoing issues, a Super League meeting is scheduled for July 30 where a draw will take place to decide the 2018/2019 season calendar. Matters concerning the league’s future reforms will not be discussed.
