Super League issues ultimatum as restructuring is rejected

Following the decision to reject the idea of restructuring the championship for the 2020/2021 season, the Super League has issued a strict ultimatum to the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO).

It seems that there won’t be a restructuring process of the Super League after all. In recent weeks, reports had heavily suggested that the organisation was planning to expand the amount of teams participating in the league for the 2020/2021 season, but that idea was emphatically rejected during a crucial Board of Directors meeting on Monday.

An overwhelming majority of 13-1 voted in favour of keeping the Super League format the same in the 2020/2021 campaign. Only Panionios, who were relegated to the Super League 2 after finishing in last place, wanted the championship to be restructured.

The result of the vote will probably mean that only Panionios suffer relegation with PAS Giannina earning promotion. PAS won the 2019/2020 Super League 2 season.

However, in order for the decision to be ratified, the EPO must issue the green light.

In a defiant stance, it has been confirmed that if the EPO refuses to express its agreement with the decision to not proceed with the restructuring, the Super League will prevent the 2020/2021 season from starting. The Super League released this following statement on its official website:

“By majority, the Board of Directors of the Super League decided to oppose the restructuring idea, instead insisting on organising the championship with 14 teams. In the event that the Super League’s decision isn’t respected by the EPO, the organising authority has decided that the 2020/2021 Super League season will not start.”

The playoff and playout format will also remain in place.

The EPO will decide whether to ratify the Super League’s decision next Monday.
