For the first time in the Greek top flight’s history, the Super League champion, European spots, and fight for relegation will be decided via a postseason playoff and playout system. The Super League changed the league’s format this past summer as the number of teams decreased from 16 to 14 teams. PLAYOFFS

The Super League regular season, 26 matchdays, came to an end over the weekend with OFI claiming the final Playoff spot. The top-six teams in the regular season, Olympiacos, PAOK, AEK, Panathinaikos, OFI, and Aris, will compete in the Playoffs. All points from the regular season will carry over to the Playoffs, which will see each team in this mini-group play the others in home and away fixtures, totaling ten matches per team.

The team with the most points at the end of the playoffs will be crowned Super League champions.

Teams ranked second, third, and fourth will qualify for the UEFA Champions League or Europa League. The Super League’s fifth-placed team will also qualify for the Europa League if the winner of the Greek Cup has already secured a place in Europe via their finish in the Super League.

Panathinaikos, who are currently serving a three-year ban from UEFA, are not allowed to compete in Europe next season.  As a result, the fifth-placed team (or sixth-placed team depending on the Cup champion) could earn a ticket to continental football next season. Panathinaikos are looking to overturn the ban as their financial situation has drastically improved over the last year.

The teams will enter the Playoffs with the following points:

  1. Olympiacos 66 points

  2. PAOK 59 points

  3. AEK 51 points

  4. Panathinaikos 44 points

  5. OFI 34 points

  6. Aris 34 points

PLAYOUTS

The Playouts will include the bottom eight teams from the regular season, Atromitos, Larissa, Xanthi, Asteras Tripolis, Lamia, Volos, Panetolikos, and Panionios. Like the Playoffs, all points from the regular season will transfer over to the Playouts.

Since eight teams are competing in the Playouts, each team will play the others once, totaling seven fixtures. The teams that finish in 7th-10th in the league, Atromitos, Larissa, Xanthi, and Asteras Tripolis, will play four games at home and three games on the road. The bottom four teams, Lamia, Volos, Panetolikos, and Panionios, will play four games on the road and three games at home.

The team that finishes in 13th at the end of the playouts will compete in a two-legged promotion/relegation playoff with the runner-up from the Super League 2. The winner of the two-legged playoff will compete in the 2020/21 Super League while the losing side will compete in the 2020/21 Super League 2.

The last-placed team at the end of the playouts will be relegated to the Super League 2, while the Super League 2 champion will be promoted to the Super League for the 2020/21 season.

The teams will enter the Playouts with the following points:

7. Atromitos 32 points

8. Larissa 30 points

9. Xanthi 30 points

10. Asteras Tripolis 30 points

11. Lamia 27 points

12. Volos 27 points

13. Panetolikos 17 points

14. Panionios 11 points

The draw for the Playoffs and Playouts will take place on Thursday with the postseason’s kick-off expected to be delayed by one week.
