Sticking to their promise, the Super League and Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) are continuing to appoint foreign referees for top level matches in the highest tier of Greek football, handing 30-year old Sandro Scharer the whistle for the upcoming Olympiacos - PAOK duel which will take place at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus on Sunday. Previously, last week, Finn Mattias Gestranius was the man in the middle for PAOK’s 2:0 triumph over AEK Athens at home.

Born in Switzerland, Scharer started refereeing matches in the Swiss Super League in 2013, receiving his FIFA licence two years later. In the 2018/2019 campaign, Scharer was the main referee for the Rosenborg - Celtic (0:0) battle in the UEFA Champions League, then taking charge of a Kairat - Sigma Olomouc (1:2) match in the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds. He also laid down the law in the Belarus - San Marino (5:0) match-up in the newly created UEFA Nations League competition.

In his career, he’s handed out a large 13 red cards in just 61 matches and is a teacher in his free time. Begim Zogaj (linesman), Sladan Josipovic (linesman) and Aristotelis Diamantopoulos (fourth official) are Scharer’s assistants.

Olympiacos host PAOK at 20:30 local time on Sunday as the Thrylos aim to extend their lead at the top of the Super League table to five points.
