This summer, Antetokounmpo’s contract with Panathinaikos is expiring, and the two parties have not been able to come to terms on a new deal. Eurohoops reported that there was too much of a financial gap between Antetokounmpo and Panathinaikos.

In two seasons with Panathinaikos, Antetokounmpo won the Basket League twice and one Greek Cup, while reaching the quarter-finals of the EuroLeague in both campaigns. Antetokounmpo averaged 4.2 points and 1.8 rebounds in the 2018/2019 EuroLeague season.

This year, younger brother Giannis Antetokounmpo was crowned the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the NBA season, with the Milwaukee Bucks winning the regular season and playing in the semi-finals of the ensuing playoffs. Initially, reports stated that Thanasis Antetokounmpo would join the Bucks for the Summer League, but that never happened and it looks as though he will sign a permanent two-year NBA contract with the organisation worth three million dollars.

Rick Pitino, the Panathinaikos boss for the second half of the 2018/2019 season, congratulated Thanasis with his Milwaukee move:

In 2014, Thanasis was picked 51st by the New York Knicks in the NBA Draft, and he remained with the club for two years before returning to Europe. He was included in the 2015 NBA D-League All-Defensive Second Team.

Giannis, Kostas and Thanasis Antetokounmpo have all been selected for the preliminary Greek national team roster for the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
