Following Tsitsipas’ 6-3 6-4 win over world number three Roger Federer of Switzerland, the 21-year-old from Athens had to wait for the conclusion of the second semifinal to see who his next opponent would be. Thiem prevailed 7-5 6-3 over Zverev, meaning that the Austrian will face Tsitsipas in Sunday’s final. To many, a Thiem vs. Tsitsipas final seems fitting, as the two players emerged as the two group winners from round robin.
Thiem and Tsitsipas have played each other six times, with the Austrian leading the head-to-head by 4-2. Thiem is also 9-7 in sets against Tsitsipas. On hardcourts, Thiem has won three of the four matches played between the two. However, they have never faced each other before on indoor hardcourts. Additionally, of their six previous meetings, only one took place this year. In that meeting, Thiem came from behind to beat the Greek in three sets in the final of Beijing just last month. The five previous matches between the two players all took place before Tsitsipas had even entered the top 25.
The match will take place at 18:00 local time in London tomorrow (20:00 Greece time). The winner will claim the most important trophy of their career thus far.
