FC Hamburg narrowly staved off relegation in the past few seasons, but for the first time in the club’s 55-year history, they were eventually sent to the second division of German football after finishing in 17th place with a mere 31 points in 34 matches. 26-year old Greek centre-back Kyriakos Papadopoulos made 29 league appearances for Hamburg during the current campaign and scored one goal, however his best efforts couldn’t save the club, meaning he is now expected to search for a move away from the German outfit.

With Hamburg doomed to playing Bundesliga-2 football next season, only 21 European clubs remain which have never been relegated from the top division. Among them are Greece’s Olympiacos, Panathinaikos and PAOK, three of the country’s largest teams. Panathinaikos came within a whisker of losing their top flight status this year after encountering serious financial issues, but the Greens seem to have found salvation in Thai businessman Pairoj Piempongsant and will continue playing in the Super League.

Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Athletic Bilbao, Bayern Munich, PSG, Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord, Utrecht, Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, Besiktas, FC Porto, Benfica, Sporting Lisbon, Celtic and Aberdeen are the remaining 18 European clubs which have never been relegated.
