On Wednesday, representatives of all 14 Super League clubs participated in a vital video conference, focusing on the possible resumption of the 2019/2020 campaign which is currently suspended. Olympiacos, AEK, OFI, Aris, Atromitos, AE Larissa, Asteras Tripolis, Lamia, Volos NFC and Xanthi are all in favour of restarting the season, but Panathinaikos, PAOK, Panetolikos and Panionios hold major reservations.

The resumption of the 2019/2020 season certainly wasn’t the only topic discussed, though.

At the start of the current campaign, Panionios were deducted six points as a result of failing to acquire a Super League licence, but that punishment will change for the 2020/2021 season. A majority of 8-6 voted in favour of scrapping the six-point deduction.

AEK, AEL, Aris, Asteras, Panathinaikos, Panionios, Lamia and Olympiacos agreed to get rid of the punishment. PAOK, Xanthi, Panetolikos, Volos, Atromitos and OFI proposed a three-point deduction.

However, in a major twist, the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) refused to accept the request to abolish the punishment in full. A majority of 12-5 voted in favour of introducing a three-point deduction instead.

The main reason behind the amending of the punishment is the damaging financial consequences of the coronavirus crisis on Greek sporting clubs.

The transfer restrictions will remain in place for teams without a licence, with Asteras, Atromitos, Volos, Xanthi, OFI, Panetolikos, PAOK and the EPO voting to keep that particular punishment in place.

POSSIBILITY OF CENTRALISED TELEVISION CONTRACT

Following the request submitted by Panathinaikos owner, Giannis Alafouzos, Super League clubs voted on the proposal of having one broadcasting contract for all teams participating in the championship. At the moment, Nova and ERT have deals with separate clubs, while PAOK broadcast their home games on their own television channel.

Olympiacos was the only club not to vote in favour of having one broadcasting deal for all teams. The Erythrolefki, AEL, Aris and Panionios asked for all teams involved in multi-ownership allegations to be excluded from the contract.

The Piraeus-based organisation will support the proposal if clubs accused of multi-ownership are not allowed to be a part of the deal.
