Tsitsipas cruises into third round
World number six Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece beat American Maxime Cressy in straight sets in the second round of the 2020 US Open.

Playing against the world number 168 for the first time, Tsitsipas struggled a bit in the first set. Despite winning the set 7-6(2), the Greek had to save one set point on his serve. The 22-year-old from Athens would then go on to get one break in each of the next two sets (without dropping serve himself), winning them 6-3 and 6-4 to advance to the third round of the US Open for the first time in his career.
Next up for Tsitsipas will be Croatia’s Borna Coric on Friday. Tsitsipas won his only previous meeting against the world number 32, albeit by retirement midway through the first set back in 2018 and on clay in Rome.
Hoping to join Tsitsipas in the third round is Greece’s Maria Sakkari on the women’s side. Sakkari will face American Bernarda Pera (world number 61) in her second round match on Thursday. Sakkari won their only previous meeting in straight sets at Wimbledon 2019, though Pera did beat the Greek once in a junior match back in 2010.
