Vellios leads Atromitos’ charge to the quarter-finals

Apostolos Vellios netted two goals as Atromitos cruised to a 0-3 victory away to Volos in their first-leg clash in the Greek Cup round of 16.

The visitors got off to a flying start as Dimitris Goutas headed home a Javier Umbides corner to give Atromitos the lead in just the second minute of play. Both teams had good chances to score in the remainder of the first half, but Goutas’ lone goal stood at the half-time break.
Volos looked for an equalizer in the early stages of the second half and enjoyed more possession, but failed to break down a stubborn Atromitos defense. And the visitors made the most of their first chance of the half as an unmarked Apostolos Vellios headed in a cross from Giorgos Daviotis in the 63rd minute to double Atromitos’ lead.
Vellios struck again 13 minutes later with Charis Charisis setting up the former Greek international at the back post, and the 27-year-old made no mistake from close range to secure the visitors’ victory.
The 0-3 scoreline remained at the final whistle and all but assures Atromitos a place in the quarter-finals ahead of next week’s second leg clash in Peristeri. Volos, on the other hand, will look to forget today’s result under new boss Alberto Gallego, who will slowly feel the pressure after today’s thumping despite only signing with the club yesterday.
