Vranjes’ second spell in Athens has ended earlier than expected. Initially, his loan from Anderlecht was due to run until the end of June, but it has today been prematurely cancelled as a consequence of the centre-back once again breaching discipline rules. Anderlecht had already said no to extending his loan beyond June.

The controversial 30-year-old travelled to Bosnia without permission on Monday as a result of family issues. However, due to closed borders, Vranjes cannot return to Greece. When speaking to Ilija Ivic, Vranjes reportedly refused to find a way to travel back to Athens, a statement which convinced the AEK management to end his loan now instead of waiting another two weeks. Ivic is not willing to put up with more bad behaviour from Vranjes.

Vranjes has regularly made the headlines for the wrong reasons throughout his career. Moreover, he was involved in a scrap with teammate Daniele Verde in the opening game of the Super League playoffs against Panathinaikos, with the pair having grabbed each other by the throat.

Prior to this incident, AEK had wanted to keep Vranjes until the completion of the 2019/2020 campaign, but Anderlecht didn’t cooperate and ordered the defender to arrive in Belgium upon the expiration of his loan on June 30. AEK subsequently expressed their discontent with Anderlecht’s actions in a letter sent to the Belgian club.

Since transferring to AEK on loan from Anderlecht last summer, Vranjes made 26 appearances for the Kitrinomavri across all competitions, scoring two goals. The Bosnian had previously won the Super League with AEK in the 2017/2018 season.

In other news, Dmytro Chygrynskiy has extended his contract with AEK until the end of July, meaning that the Ukrainian centre-back will remain in the Greek capital for the remainder of the current campaign. Reports have also suggested that Chygrynskiy is engaging in talks with AEK concerning the signing of a new 1+1 deal.

AEK will next play in the Super League playoffs on Saturday against Aris at the Olympic Stadium. The Enosi occupy second place of the standings and are also involved in the semi-finals of the Greek Cup.
