Although they struggled for consistency throughout the campaign, Panathinaikos displayed plenty of promise for the future during the regular season, notably defeating AEK and PAOK against the odds. In the end, the Athenians finished seven points behind third-placed AEK in fourth spot of the standings, but Giorgos Donis’ troops have once again proven that they are capable of competing on an even footing with the big guns on their day.

In accordance with data provided by Transfermarkt, Panathinaikos possess the lowest average age of the Super League with a figure of 24.8. Struggling Panionios, who find themselves languishing at the foot of the table with a mere 11 points on the board, are second in the list with their average age standing at 25.5, while Volos are third at 25.9. Runaway leaders Olympiacos are in sixth place with an average age of 26.8, reigning champions PAOK are down in 10th (27.1), AEK are eighth (27.0), and Aris hold the second-oldest roster with their average age recorded at 28.8.

In the current campaign, Panathinaikos have struck an effective balance between experience and youth, with young guns such as Tasos Chatzigiovanis, Ilias Chatzitheodoridis, and Giannis Bouzoukis supported by the more experienced Dimitris Kourbelis, Bart Schenkeveld, Mattias Johansson, and Federico Macheda. Norwegian attacking midfielder, Ghayas Zahid, has also been a great addition for Panathinaikos after joining on loan from APOEL in the summer of 2019. The 25-year-old registered four goals and five assists across all competitions.

Panathinaikos have not won a trophy since claiming the Greek Cup in 2014.
