Football is the most popular sport in the world. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, interest in football has not fallen off and as fans return to the stadium interest will only continue to grow.

The recent European Championship was a great success as fans attended matches and the tournament ran very smoothly despite the pandemic fears. Italy defeated England in the final in a thrilling matchup that ended in a penalty shoot out with the home fans leaving Wembley Stadium in disappointment. England still remained without a European championship while Italy were crowned champions for a second time.

Many wagers were placed on the European championships with the tournament favorites and reigning World champions, France, surprisingly bowing out in the last 16 after losing to Switzerland in penalties. England were also one of the favorites, ahead of Italy, before the tournament started, but Italy proved to be the best team with their robust defence leading the charge to glory.

Now that the Euros have finished, attention now turns to domestic and European football. The English Premier League, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and the new UEFA Europa Conference League now take center stage as club football kicks off.

You can now bet on who will win these competitions through many online casinos, but Melbet offers a large selection of betting options. Qualification for the European competitions, such as the Champions League and Europa Conference League, have already begun so do not delay in placing your tournament-favorite wagers. Melbet registration is easy and can be done within a few minutes so you do not miss any of the action.

Olympiacos, who is Greece’s only representative in the UEFA Champions League, have already gotten off to a great start in qualifying as they dispatched Azerbaijan champions, Neftci, in the second qualifying round. The Reds defeated Neftci 1-0 in Greece and then one week later, Olympiacos traveled to Azerbaijan to defeat Neftci once again by the same scoreline with an early goal by Giorgos Masouras.

However, it was a different story for two Greek representatives in the UEFA Europa Conference League, AEK and Aris. Both were handed favorable draws in the second qualifying round but they could not overcome their opponents.

AEK fell to Velez in their first leg in Bosnia 2-1 and needed a second-half stoppage time goal in the second leg to send the tie into extra time. After a goalless extra time, the match went to penalties where AEK fell under pressure, missing three out of five penalties, while Velez converted three of five penalties to shock the Athenians and move on to the third qualifying round.

Aris had a tough task after falling 2-0 away to Astana in the first leg but the home crowd pushed the Thessalonikis in the second leg as Aris scored in either half to win the match 2-0 in regular time, forcing the game to overtime. However, Astana crushed Aris’ hopes of advancing as they scored in the final minute of extra time to win the leg on aggregate 3-2.

The football season is underway and there is a lot of football to play. Fans are excited for the new year in a post covid world and clubs are ready to fight it for glory both domestically and at the continental level.
