INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLY

Greece 2 - 3 Iceland
Fortounis 19' (p), 31'

Traustason 34'
Ingason 70'
Sigthorsson 82'

Greece had a 2-0 lead until three conceded goals from set plays resulted in a 2-3 defeat for Greece in today’s friendly against Iceland. Both goals for Greece came from Fortounis, the first with a penalty. The defeat comes after Thursday’s friendly win versus Montenegro.

Although Greece was strong on the attacking end, poor defending led to three conceded goals from set plays. Olympiacos player Fortounis opened the score in the 19th minute from the penalty spot after Torosidis was fouled in the box. Twelve minutes later Fortounis found the back of the net again with a great strike to double Greece’s lead. Iceland struck the woodwork twice in the first half before taking advantage of Oikonomou’s mistake to pull one back before the break. Greece hit the post for the second time at the beginning of the second half with Tzioli’s header, but Iceland pushed on as the second half progressed. Two headers in the final 20 minutes, from set plays, gave the visitors the 2-3 lead and a comeback win.

Greece has shown more signs of improvement as they prepare for the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers. Although Greece defeated Montenegro in Thursday’s friendly match, the loss against Iceland may affect team morale. Greece has two more friendlies scheduled in June in Australia. Iceland will take part in this summer’s Euro 2016, qualifying ahead of Turkey and the Netherlands.
