Anorthosis extended their lead over Omonoia to five points after a 2-0 win at home to AEL Limassol at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium in Larnaca. A pair of first half goals by Ruben Rayos and Nika Kacharava saw the league leaders through. With this loss, AEL are in fourth place.
THE MATCH
Anorthosis didn’t wait long to stamp their authority on this match. After some good early pressure, they took the lead in 11th minute, as Ruben Rayos gathered the ball and struck it beyond AEL goalkeeper Vozinha with the help of the post.
Davor Zdravkovski looked to respond, but Giorgi Loria read the play well and made the save. Loria came up large again when Ruben Jurado was gifted a golden opportunity after sloppy Anorthosis play in defence.
Anorthosis showed their appreciation of Loria’s efforts by doubling their lead in the 38th minute.
Tornike Okriashvili played in a cross that Jurado headed out, but only as far as Nika Kacharava. Kacharava subsequently unleashed a powerful strike that was too much for Vozinha, making it 2-0 in Anorthosis’ favour.
In the second half, Anorthosis continued to carry the play, and Vozinha made impressive saves on Kacharava, as well as Okriashvili. Loria, for his part, made a pair of nice stops on Ryan Mmaee. Anorthosis, however, comfortably held on to register yet another important win in the championship.
