On Sunday, AEK released this following statement:

“AEK FC announces the signing of a contract with Massimo Carrera. The Italian coach has signed a deal with our team until the summer of 2021. His coaching staff will include Gianluca Colonnello as his first assistant and Giorgio D’Urbano as his fitness coach, who will arrive in Athens later in the day.”

Carrera, 55, had been unemployed since October 2018 when he left Spartak Moscow. In 2017, the Italian ended Spartak’s 16-year wait to win the Russian Premier League title again, before he subsequently claimed the Super Cup with the capital club in the same year. Carrera also worked with Juventus and the Italian national team in the past.

Earlier in the day, AEK had confirmed the termination of Nikos Kostenoglou’s contract:

“AEK FC announces the termination of its contract with Nikos Kostenoglou. The Greek coach and ex-footballer became our manager at a very difficult time, managing to safely lead the team out of its crisis. AEK FC extends its warmest thanks to Nikos and his assistants for making a contribution to the club during a crucial period.”

AEK thrashed Panionios 5-0 at home yesterday in Kostenoglou’s final game at the helm. Following the departure of Miguel Cardoso in late August, AEK initially made a big improvement under the leadership of Kostenoglou, but results and performances have since horribly dropped off.

AEK possess 21 points after 13 rounds of the Super League season. OFI can move above AEK in third place if they beat Lamia today.
