The Greek star breezed through the 95th ranked Italian early on, only losing a total of nine points in the opening set. Tsitsipas broke the Italian’s serve on three occasions to claim a bagel in the first set of the encounter.

Tsitispas, a semi-finalist at the Australian Open last year, earned two breaks of serve in the second set - in both the fourth and eight service game of the set - to claim two sets to love advantage (6/2).

Tsitsipas had three match point opportunities in the third set, however, failed to capitalise at 5/2. The fan-favourite finally secured the victory with an ace to end the match in one hour and 45 minutes in front of a vocal Greek crowd at the Margaret Court Arena.

Tsitsipas will now face 36-year old German Philipp Kohlschreiber in the second round of the Australian Open on Tuesday. The veteran currently sits 79th in the ATP rankings. The pair played each other twice before in 2018. The Greek currently leads the head-to-head matchups 2:0 with a victory in the Dubai Tennis Championships (4/6, 6/3, 6/4) and another win seven months later in Stockholm (6/3, 7/6).
