Nick Calathes’ impressive season for Panathinaikos hasn’t gone unnoticed after the Greek international was named the recipient of the 2017/2018 Greek Basket League Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
Calathes guided Panathinaikos to a perfect regular season before steering the Trifylli to a second straight Greek Championship with standout performances in a 3-2 series win over Olympiacos in the Basket League Final.
Calathes, who also received MVP honours for the 2016/2017 season, edged out the likes of former teammate Mike James, Olympiacos’ Vassilis Spanoulis, and former Lavrio playmaker McKenzie Moore after receiving the most votes from team captains, coaches, media professionals, and fans.
Despite winning back-to-back MVP honours, Calathes still has a long way to go in order to match the all-time leader, former Panathinaikos legend Dimitris Diamantidis, who won six MVP honours before retiring in 2016.
MVP… at both ends of the court
Although Calathes is well known for leading the Panathinaikos offense, the Greek international was also rewarded for his efforts on the defensive end of the court after he was named the Basket League’s Best Defender for the 2017/2018.
Perhaps it comes as no surprise that Calathes was the league’s best defender after having won the award in the two previous seasons -- making him the leader in all-time wins of the award.
Calathes’ Panathinaikos teammate, Thanasis Antetokounmpo, finished second in voting that took account votes from team captains, coaches, media professionals, and fans.
