The Greek national team crashed out of the Men’s European Water Polo Championship in Barcelona, losing to the Spanish hosts 6:10 in the quarter-finals.
Having finished in first place of Group B, Spain had qualified directly for the quarter-final stage, while Greece had to compete in a knockout playoff match against Germany (13:5) on Sunday. With that extra day’s rest in the bank, the Spaniards made their fresh legs count, edging past the Ethniki Omada in front of a passionate home crowd.
Spain held a slender 4:3 advantage after the first half, but it was the third quarter where the damage was done. In a horrible frame, the Greeks contrived to concede four unanswered goals, giving themselves a huge mountain to climb in the final period. Greece did attempt a comeback, but despite their best efforts, the game was over as a contest and Spain held on to claim a 10:6 triumph. Konstantinos Genidounias was the top Greek scorer with two goals to his name.
On Thursday, Greece will play Russia in the first of two classification games to see who comes in fifth position of the tournament rankings.
