A 67-61 win over Peristeri on Wednesday night helped Promitheas advance to this weekend’s Greek Cup Final for the first time in the basketball club’s 34-year history. After a rapid rise through the lower tiers of Greek basketball, Promitheas has been transformed into one of the best-run clubs in Greece despite a turbulent time for many Basket League sides.

Competing in the fourth-tier of Greek basketball just six years ago, Promitheas gained back-to-back-to-back promotions starting in 2013/2014 to rise up the Greek basketball pyramid in impressive fashion. A club that, for the majority of its history, has been best-known as a local club in Patras playing in semi-professional leagues has emerged as one of the dark horses in the Basket League.

But Promitheas’ basketball journey hasn’t been limited to success domestically. Despite missing the Basket League playoffs in their first season, Promitheas have rebounded to reach the playoffs the past two seasons and have even qualified for European competitions like the Basketball Champions League and this season the 7DAYS EuroCup.

It would be a non-story had the club failed miserably in Europe, but a run to the Champions League Round of 16 last season set the groundwork for Promitheas to become one of Greek basketball’s best kept secrets. A transition to the EuroCup this season has seen the club take European basketball within stride as the club look destined to reach the quarterfinals of the competition in hopes of a much deeper run this season.

Pair this all with a strong 12-6 record in the Basket League and Promitheas have emerged as one of the outside threats to Panathinaikos’ crown. Having beat the Trifylli in the quarterfinals of the Greek Cup, the recipe for Promitheas’ success is there but for now the club will be eyeing a shot at their first piece of major silverware against another of Greek basketball’s in-form clubs, four-time Cup winners AEK.
