After succumbing to a defeat to Germany in their opening match of UEFA Women’s EURO 2021 qualifying, the Greek national women’s team bounced back in style to defeat Montenegro 4-0 Wednesday in Podgorica.

Antonis Prionas’ team controlled proceedings throughout the 90 minutes at the Gradski Stadion. Leading the way for the Ethniki was Danai-Eleni Sidira who opened the scoring in the 14th minute and secured her brace with the team’s third goal in the 78th minute. Christina Kokoviadou (51’) and Thomai Vardali (90+3’) also scored for Greece.

The victory nicely sets up a crunch clash versus Ireland on Tuesday. While the Irish side will undoubtedly be the favorites, Greece have at least given themselves a chance at second place in the section and if nothing else Tuesday’s encounter will have the feel of a final. Germany tops Group I with a maximum twelve points from four matches while Ireland are in second with six points from two. Greece are third on three points while Montenegro and Ukraine are point-less after three matches.

Women’s Team to promote Bone Marrow Donors

Before their next match versus Ireland, the Greek women are showing their commitment to social responsibility by helping promote the need for Bone Marrow volunteers. They will take part in a special event on Sunday, November 10th in Athens in conjunction with the National Transplant Organization.

The idea for the Ethniki’s involvement came from team doctor Alexandra Karavasili and was immediately embraced by the Greek women’s side. The goal is to sign up as many people as possible to become bone marrow donors and also raise awareness of the importance of the public to enlist as donors.

This is another example of the human side of women’s football in Greece and the desire of the national team to play an active role in communities throughout Greece.
