Greeks Abroad Review: Cup goals witnessed in Europe 

AGONAsport’s Shaun Nicolaides rounds up the performances of Greeks playing in other leagues in this week’s Greeks Abroad Review.

In the Dutch Cup, international striker Vangelis Pavlidis hit the target as Willem II eventually ended up losing to Heerenveen, while Tasos Bakasetas converted a penalty for Alanyaspor in their aggregate triumph over Kasimpasa. It’s also worth noting that James Efmorfidis, representing Almere City in the second level of Dutch football, scored his fourth goal of the season.

MAIN MEN (Comprised of current/former national team players):

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Missed the 2-2 draw at Chelsea, but he did play the entire 90 minutes of a 2-1 FA Cup triumph at Bournemouth.

Jose Cholevas (Watford/English Premier League): Sat on the bench while Watford conceded a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, before he played the entirety of a 2-1 loss against Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup.

Panagiotis Retsos (Bayer Leverkusen/German Bundesliga): Left on the bench while his team defeated Fortuna Dusseldorf 3-0.

Sebastian Vasiliadis (Paderborn/German Bundesliga): Played the entirety of an important 2-0 triumph at Freiburg.

Konstantinos Stafylidis (Hoffenheim/German Bundesliga): Missed a 3-0 win against Werder Bremen on the road.

Stefanos Kapino (Werder Bremen/German Bundesliga): Kept the bench warm while Werder were defeated by Hoffenheim.

Kostas Manolas (Napoli/Serie A): Played the full 90 minutes against Lazio as Napoli won 1-0 in the Italian Cup and the entire match with Juventus with his team claiming a 2-1 league victory.

Orestis Karnezis (Napoli/Serie A): Left on the bench for both games.

Panagiotis Tachtsidis (Lecce/Serie A): Received a yellow card while playing the full 90 minutes of a 3-0 loss at Hellas Verona.

Charalampos Lykogiannis (Cagliari/Serie A): Stayed on the bench with Cagliari drawing 1-1 at Internazionale.

Odisseas Vlachodimos (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Tallied a clean sheet as Benfica comfortably beat Pacos de Ferreira 2-0 on the road.

Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Did not play any part of the victory against Pacos de Ferreira.

Dimitris Siovas (Leganes/La Liga): The injured defender missed the 1-0 triumph at Ebro in the Spanish Cup and the 0-0 league draw with Atletico Madrid.

Vasilis Lampropoulos (Deportivo/La Liga 2): Remained on the bench as Albacete were beaten 1-0.

Efthymis Koulouris (Toulouse/Ligue 1): The forward was introduced as a substitute in the 70th minute of a 3-0 loss at Olympique Lyonnais. Toulouse haven’t won in Ligue 1 since October.

Anastasios Donis (Reims/Ligue 1): Used as a substitute in the 77th minute of a 3-0 cup loss to Paris Saint Germain, and was then replaced in the 57th minute of a 1-0 defeat against Metz in the league.

Konstantinos Mitroglou (PSV Eindhoven/Eredivisie): Sat on the bench in a 2-0 cup defeat to Breda, however we was used as a substitute in the 55th minute of a 1-1 Eredivisie draw with Twente.

Marios Vrousai (Willem II/Eredivisie): Used as a substitute in the 38th minute of a 3-2 cup loss to Heerenveen and played the remaining 17 minutes of a 0-0 league draw with Zwolle.

Vangelis Pavlidis (Willem II/Eredivisie): Scored against Heerenveen and had to come off in the 38th minute. Subsequently played 74 minutes in the game with Zwolle at home.

Tasos Bakasetas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Scored while playing the entirety of a 3-2 cup loss at Kasimpasa. At the weekend, he also played 90 minutes in a 2-1 league win against the same opponents.

Manolis Siopis (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Played 90 minutes of both matches against Kasimpasa on the road.

Georgios Tzavellas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): On the bench during the two games with Kasimpasa.

Panagiotis Kone (Western United/A-League): Played the entirety of an entertaining 4-3 home defeat to Adelaide United.

GERMANY

Panagiotis Vlachodimos (Grossaspach/3 Liga): Started the match against Kaiserslautern, eventually being substituted in the second minute of second-half stoppage time.

NETHERLANDS

Konstantinos Lamprou (Vitesse/Eredivisie): Kept on the bench during the 2-0 win against Heracles in the Dutch Cup and the 1-1 draw with Emmen in the Eredivisie.

Giorgos Strezos (Willem II/Eredivisie): The fellow back-up goalkeeper remained an unused substitute in the 2-3 loss to Heerenveen and the 0-0 draw with Zwolle.

Giannis Mystakidis (De Graafschap/Eerste Divisie): Used as a substitute in the 80th minute of a 3-2 home triumph over Maastricht.

James Efmorfidis (Almere City/Eerste Divisie): Scored his team’s third goal in the 3-3 draw against AZ Alkmaar Jong. Substituted with 11 minutes left on the clock.

BELGIUM

Giorgos Marinos (Charleroi/Jupiler League): Charleroi will next play on Wednesday.

Nikos Kenourgios (Zulte Waregem/Jupiler League): Not included in the squad to face Royal Antwerp. His club suffered a 2-1 setback.

Dimitris Chatziisaias (Cercle Brugge/Jupiler League): Played the entire 90 minutes of the narrow 2-1 home loss to Anderlecht.

ITALY

Giorgos Kyriakopoulos (Sassuolo/Serie A): Played the full 90 minutes against Sampdoria on the road, as the game ended level at 0-0.

Dimitris Nikolaou (Empoli/Serie B): Sat on the bench as Empoli played to a 1-1 home draw with Chievo.

PORTUGAL

Alexandros Voilis (Casa Pia/Liga Pro): In the Liga Pro, the second tier of Portuguese football, the 19-year-old forward was introduced for the second half of the 2-0 loss to Farense.

TURKEY

Stelios Kitsiou (Ankaragucu/Turkish Super Lig): Helped Ankaragucu tally a 1-1 draw at Kayserispor by playing the entirety of the match.

Andreas Tatos (Altay/Turkish First League): Did not play any part in the 1-0 home triumph over Istanbulspor.

SCOTLAND

Marios Ogboe (Hamilton/Scottish Premiership): Made an assist for the first goal in the 4-2 home defeat to Livingston. Replaced in the 67th minute.

HUNGARY

Theodoros Berios (Kisvarda/OTP Bank Liga): Played 90 minutes of a 1-0 away defeat against Mezokovesd.

Stavros Tsoukalas (Kisvarda/OTP Bank Liga): Started the same game, before being substituted in the 52nd minute.

ISRAEL

Andreas Gianniotis (Maccabi Tel Aviv/Israeli Premier League): Kept the bench warm as his team defeated Ashdod 2-0 in Tel Aviv.
