Greeks Abroad Review: Lampropoulos misses penalty for Deportivo

In Spain, former AEK centre-back Vasilis Lampropoulos endured a tough night with Deportivo in the domestic cup competition, as he contrived to miss a penalty which resulted in his employers suffering elimination. Elsewhere, James Efmorfidis scored his fourth goal of the season, hitting the target in the second tier of Dutch football.

A lot of leagues across Europe are still on their respective winter breaks.

MAIN MEN (Comprised of current/former national team players): 

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Played 90 minutes of the 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace.

Jose Cholevas (Watford/English Premier League): Remained an unused substitute as Watford comfortably defeated Bournemouth 3-0 on the road.

Nikos Karelis (Brentford/English Championship): The injured striker is out on the sidelines for the rest of the season. This week, Brentford defeated Queens Park Rangers 3-1.

Kostas Manolas (Napoli/Serie A): Received a yellow card while playing the full 90 minutes of a 1-0 setback at Lazio in Serie A, before staying on the pitch for the entirety of a 2-0 victory against Perugia in the Italian Cup.

Orestis Karnezis (Napoli/Serie A): Sat on the bench in the defeat to Lazio and wasn’t included in the squad to face Perugia.

Panagiotis Tachtsidis (Lecce/Serie A): Played the full 90 minutes of the 2-0 away loss against Parma.

Charalampos Lykogiannis (Cagliari/Serie A): Remained on the bench in the 2-0 home defeat to AC Milan, but he did then play the entire 90 minutes of the heavy 4-1 loss against Internazionale in the Italian Cup.

Odisseas Vlachodimos (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): In the domestic league, he conceded one goal in a 2-1 victory over Aves in Lisbon, and he was not included in the squad for a 3-2 Portuguese Cup win against Rio Ave. 

Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Used as a substitute in stoppage time of the match against Aves, and he then made another substitute appearance in the Portuguese Cup.

Dimitris Siovas (Leganes/La Liga): Did not participate in a 4-0 victory against Murcia in the Spanish Cup.

Vasilis Lampropoulos (Deportivo/La Liga 2): Played the entirety of the Spanish Cup tie against Unionistas, missing a penalty in the ensuing shootout as Deportivo suffered elimination in heartbreaking circumstances.

Efthymis Koulouris (Toulouse/Ligue 1): Started the home game against Brest and was substituted in the 68th minute. Toulouse conceded a damaging 5-2 defeat. 

Anastasios Donis (Reims/Ligue 1): Used as a substitute in the 79th minute of a 2-0 loss to Nimes on the road.

NETHERLANDS

James Efmorfidis (Almere/Eerste Divisie): Scored his team’s goal in the 1-1 draw at the Go Ahead Eagles. Played the full 90 minutes.

ITALY

Giorgos Kyriakopoulos (Sassuolo/Serie A): Emerged from the bench as a substitute in the 86th minute of an emphatic 3-0 defeat against Udinese on the road.
