After being adamant just a few days ago about still holding the Tokyo Olympics from July 24 to August 9, the IOC is now considering postponing the games amid pressure from athletes and national Olympic committees. This is not only due to the uncertainty surrounding the future of the coronavirus, but also because many athletes and teams are currently unable to train properly and as a result risk being severely underprepared for the Games.

In its statement, the IOC said “In light of the worldwide deteriorating situation... the executive board has today initiated the next step in the IOC's scenario-planning. These scenarios relate to modifying existing operational plans for the Games to go ahead on 24 July 2020, and also for changes to the start date of the Games.”

Based on reports, it seems likely that the Olympics would not be completely cancelled, but that they would be postponed for an entire year.
