Maria marches on in Melbourne
Greece’s Maria Sakkari defeated Russia’s Margarita Gasparyan 6-2 6-2 in the first round of the 2020 Australian Open.

Prior to this match, the two had played against each other twice before, with each winning one time. The Greek world number 23 dominated the match from start to finish, earning a comfortable 6-2 6-2 win over the world number 100. Sakkari did not face a single break point throughout the entire match.
This is now the fourth time in Sakkari’s career that she has reached the second round of the Australian Open. She will face either China’s Shuai Peng or Japan’s Nao Hibino in tomorrow’s second round.
Sakkari is also playing doubles here, partnering Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic for the third consecutive major tournament. They will face sixth-seeded Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada and Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia in the first round.
