Panathinaikos preserved their perfect record in the Greek Basket League with an 88-78 defeat of Kolossos at the Venetoklio Indoor Hall in Rhodes on Monday night.

Konstantinos Mitoglou’s third-career double-double led the way for the Trifylli as the Greek youngster tallied 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, while colleague Lukas Lekavicius notched 18 points to lead all Panathinaikos scorers in the win.

Panathinaikos, who improved to 16-0 on the season, cemented their place atop the Basket League standings as the Trifylli finally used their game in hand after the original meeting between the two sides was rescheduled after several Panathinaikos players fell ill.

Kolossos’ Slaven Cupkovic led all scorers on the night with 20 points, but the Serbian’s efforts weren’t enough to prevent the Rhodes outfit from sixth-straight loss.

Perhaps it was a bit of a surprise to see Kolossos leading at the end of the first quarter as the home side grabbed a 29-24 lead out of the gates.

Panathinaikos quickly replied in the second quarter and the Trifylli were level soon enough before taking a 47-43 lead into halftime.

A tight third quarter meant Kolossos were still within five points (66-61) of the league leaders heading into the fourth quarter, but a resilient effort from Panathinaikos in the final frame ensured there would be no shocks for Rick Pitino’s men.

Panathinaikos, who have now won three games on the trot in all competitions, will hope to make it four in a row when the visit Herbalife Gran Canaria in the EuroLeague on Thursday night as time winds down on the Trifylli’s playoff push.

Menawhile, Kolossos continue to sit at the foot of the table in the Greek top flight and will hope to avoid a seventh-straight defeat in the league when Ifaistos Limnou visit Rhodes on Saturday evening.
