Olympiacos Prepare For Formidable Fixture List

Olympiacos are set for an extremely challenging schedule upon the club’s return from the international break. Qualification for the Champions’ League has been well and truly welcomed, however with it has also come a perfect storm of sorts with regard to the team’s fixture schedule through the first third of the 2019/20 season.

Upon returning from the international break, Olympiacos will play at home against Volos in a Super League encounter. Then comes the team’s first Champions’ League match against Tottenham at home. That will start a streak of the Erythrolefki having to play a domestic derby following every Group Stage game they will play in the Champions’ League. After facing Tottenham, Pedro Martins’ men must gear up for the clash against eternal rivals Panathinaikos at the Olympic Stadium.

Following the second Champions’ League match, away to Red Star, there is a trip a few days later to Thessaloniki to take on Aris. The home tie against Bayern Munich in late October is sandwiched between Super League encounters with OFI and AEK.

After a trip to Munich on Matchday 4, Olympiacos return to Greece to face off against Atromitos, one of the league’s most consistent sides over the last couple seasons. Following a trip to London to play Tottenham on Matchday 5, Olympiacos host a crucial match against title rivals PAOK at the Karaiskakis Stadium that weekend.

There will be some small respite as December comes and the Champions’ League campaign ends with the 11 December match with Red Star at home.

All in all, it promises to be a massive test for the club and whether they are prepared to adequately challenge on two fronts. Most observers believe that Olympiacos are playing for third place in the Champions’ League at best. Regardless, it remains to be seen whether the team can continuously rebound from their European affairs to play difficult matches back at home. The club’s flurry of activity toward the end of the transfer window suggests they want to ensure there is enough depth in the squad in order to combat this formidable fixture pile-up.
