Giorgos Donis’ Panathinaikos produced the more creative football at the Livadeia Municipal Stadium, but there was a lack of cutting edge while Levadiakos, who are fighting for their top flight future, hit the post twice.
Greens’ captain Dimitris Kourbelis came closest to scoring for the visitors in the first half when his shot hit the post, but a draw was just about a fair result on the night.
Panathinaikos remain unmoved in fifth place following this result, while Levadiakos also stay in the relegation zone but edge a point closer to PAS Giannina. The gap between those two teams is now four points.
THE MATCH
The Greens came into this match with momentum on their side following their midweek win over Panaitolikos in Agrinio, and their attacking intent was clear from the outset with Federico Macheda causing plenty of problems for the home defence early on.
And it was Macheda who almost created the first goal of the game when his header found its way to Dimitris Kourbelis. Unfortunately though, the PAO skipper’s shot cannoned off the post.
The visitors enjoyed the lion’s share of possession with little attacking threat coming from the home side, until the 68th minute when it was their turn to hit the woodwork. Serbian midfielder Marko Stanojević was the unlucky Levadiakos, with his powerful long-range shot finding the upright rather than the back of Sokratis Dioudis’ net.
There was a flurry of late action with both sides having chances to score. First Panathinaikos’ Israeli forward Omri Altman fired a shot which flew inches wide of the post in the 82nd minute, when Levadiakos hit the woodwork again three minutes later.
This time it was defender Giorgos Zisopoulos who was thwarted by the frame of the goal, but as replays confirmed, he was in an offside position.
The Greens pushed hard for a winner as the clock ticked down, but winger Tasos Chatzigiovanis’ cross was superbly cut out by a last-ditch interception by Benjamin Angoua, with Macheda waiting to tap into an empty net.
