Their spirited survival bid was ultimately unsuccessful. Until the concluding two matchdays of the playouts, the Panthers’ fate was in their own hands, but they contrived to lose against Panetolikos at home before producing an uninspiring performance today in a 0-0 draw with Atromitos. Panionios end the season in last place of the Super League with 23 points, one less than Xanthi.

However, if the Greek football ladder is restructured this summer, it’s highly likely that Panionios will in fact remain in the Super League for the 2020/2021 campaign. There is talk of increasing the amount of clubs participating in the Super League.

Atromitos dominated the vast majority of proceedings in Peristeri. Boasting the vast majority of possession, the hosts applied plenty of pressure on Panionios, testing Matic Kotnik between the sticks who was in inspired form.

Kotnik pulled off superb saves throughout the 90 minutes to keep Panionios in the game.

In truth, Panionios barely got a sight of the Atromitos goal, but they did have one wonderful opportunity in the last minute.

Showing great skill, Sotiris Tsiloulis pulled to an ideal shooting position, but his low effort was deflected wide and Panionios’ chance was gone.
