Xanthi secure point to avoid the drop

Xanthi avoided relegation from the Super League with a gritty 0-0 draw at AE Larissa in their concluding game of the 2019/2020 playouts.

Requiring points to guarantee safety, Xanthi professionally dealt with their task at the AEL FC Arena, keeping their opponents at bay to see the match out and draw 0-0. With Panionios only drawing at Atromitos, Xanthi have avoided the drop, occupying 13th place with 24 points. The relegation/promotion playoff against the second-placed Super League 2 is unlikely to happen this year after the second tier ended prematurely.
However, if several reports are to be believed, there will be a restructuring of the Greek club footballing ladder this summer with the amount of Super League participants set to be increased.
Xanthi had the best chance of the first half. Escaping his marker on the left flank, William pulled to a shooting position, but his effort was stopped by Olympiacos-bound Ogmundur Kristinsson.
Aleksandar Kovacevic came close again for Xanthi in the second stanza with a powerful attempt.
For their part, AEL didn’t have many chances, and they were had to settle with an underwhelming draw which means they finish in third spot of the playout standings.
