The lengthy undefeated streak is over. At the weekend, PAOK suffered their maiden Super League defeat in almost two years, as the Dikefalos tou Vorra were beaten 4-2 by arch-rivals Aris at the Kleanthis Vikelidis Stadium. In the first half, in-form Polish striker Karol Swiderski initially handed PAOK the lead, but Aris subsequently responded with four successive goals from Daniel Larsson, Fran Velez, Lindsay Rose and Lucas Sasha. During the closing stages, Leo Matos grabbed a consolation for the visitors, but it made little difference to the outcome.

PAOK, following a streak of 51 consecutive Super League matches without defeat, have now conceded their first loss since March 11, 2018 when the Greek champions were beaten by Asteras 3-2 in Tripoli. Following that particular match, PAOK didn’t suffer a setback in the championship for 664 days, until Aris decided to ruin their chances of reaching Olympiacos’ long-standing record of 58 unbeaten Alpha Ethniki games in a row (1973/1974 season).

Also, at the same time, it was Aris’ first win against PAOK for 10 years, with their previous win over the Dikefalos tou Vorra having been registered on May 19, 2010 (3-2). It was also the maiden occasion in 20 years when Aris knocked four goals past PAOK.

Nevertheless, despite the disappointment of losing to Aris, PAOK will have to pick themselves up quickly as AEK prepare to visit the Toumba Stadium on Sunday. PAOK, currently boasting a nine-point advantage over AEK, are trailing league leaders Olympiacos by a single point with 17 rounds in the books.
