Georgios Papagiannis edged Jacob Wiley in the final round to claim his first-ever Slam Dunk title in Heraklion on Sunday.
In what was somewhat of an anticlimactic finish to the contest, Wiley’s struggles to register a dunk in the final round handed Papagiannis a win even after the Panathinaikos center struggled with his own attempt.
A field featuring five of the Basket League’s top dunkers and Panagiotis Filippakos from second-tier side Dafni Dafniou competed for the crown with each participant able to register just one dunk.
Wiley and Papagiannis advanced to the final after posting the two highest scores from the first round with the former the lone player to manage a perfect 50-point dunk.
In the final, Papagiannis enlisted the help of Panathinaikos teammate Tyrese Rice in hope of completing an alley hoop slam off the side of the net but after failing to convert on two chances, Papagiannis resorted to a similar move he pulled-off in the opening round.
Based on Wiley’s dunk in the first round, it was expected that the Panathinaikos highflier would have enough tricks up his sleeve to beat Papagiannis. But, after two failed attempts to convert a standing jump dunk, Papagiannis was confirmed the winner by the five judges on hand.
