Another chapter was added to the Rick Pitino and Panathinaikos saga on Tuesday when the American coach tweeted his thanks to the Trifylli and its fans.

Just a couple of days since being announced as the new head coach at Iona College for the 2020/2021 season, Pitino tweeted his appreciation for his

“Thank you to the Panathinaikos owner, staff, and players. I can’t love a country and organization anymore. Thank you. You’re the best!” Pitino tweeted.

While the tweet doesn’t confirm that Pitino’s time in Greece is over, it certainly sounds like a goodbye a little less than four months after Pitino began his second stint with the Athenians.

In a recent interview with ESPN, Pitino indicated that he would honour all of his commitments in Greece with Panathinaikos and the Greek national team. Pitino’s latest tweet, however, suggests that perhaps the American coach won’t be allowed back on the Panathinaikos bench, even if he intends to see out the rest of the season.

Panathinaikos’ current campaign is currently suspended due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic with play in the Basket League and the EuroLeague halted indefinitely.

Initial rumblings from sources close to Panathinaikos suggested that the club will turn to assistant coach Georgios Vovoras to see out the rest of the season, with Pitino having backed Vovoras to succeeded him on a permanent basis.

It’s not certain if Giannakopoulos still values Pitino’s input, however, and the Trifylli could ultimately roam the continent for a successor.
