AEK’s preparation for next weekend’s FIBA Basketball Champions League Final Four hit a bit of a banana peel as the Enosi were handed a devastating 76-75 defeat by Promitheas at the OAKA Olympic Indoor Hall.

With their focus certainly on next weekend’s Final Four showdown in Athens, AEK struggled to cope with Promitheas’ pressure as the Patras-based club continued their impressive form to secure a fourth straight win in the Greek Basket League.

Manny Harris led all AEK scores with 19 points and 7 rebounds, but the American’s efforts were outdone by Promitheas’ Christos Saloustros who scored 15 points and 10 points for a double-double.

In what was a tight game from start to finish, neither side could take the initiative in the first quarter as both sides remained deadlocked at 20-20.

Promitheas would take a slight lead into half time after the visitors got the better end of the second quarter following a 17-15 run in the second frame.

Trailing 37-35 to start the second half, AEK would see the defcit increase to four points in the third quarter as the visitors continued to frustrate Dragan Sakota’s men with a 23-21 run to push the lead to 60-56.

AEK’s late effort to make a comeback in the fourth quarter was a valiant one, but ultimately thwarted by Promitheas, who held on despite a 19-16 run from AEK in the final frame.

The loss sees AEK suffer their third loss in their last four league outings as the Enosi continue to slide in the standings and face the threat of being leapfrogged by PAOK for fourth when the Thessaloniki side use their game in hand next weekend.
