Playing in the semifinals of a Masters 1000 event for the fifth time in his career, Tsitsipas was looking to reach his third career final at this level. Raonic (the current world number 30), who saved a match point in his quarterfinal win, was looking to make his fourth career Masters 1000 final. In the only previous match played between the two, Raonic defeated Tsitsipas in straight sets in the third round of this year’s Australian Open.

Neither player was troubled on serve during the first set, with the Greek failing to convert on the only break point for either player in the set. The opening set then went to a tiebreak, which Raonic won 7-5 (from 0-2 down). In the second set, the Canadian converted on the only break point held by either player, and ultimately took the set 6-3 to book his place in the final.

Raonic will now face world number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the final, and his ranking is guaranteed to go up from 30 to 18 with a loss, or to 13 with a win. On the other hand, Tsitsipas will remain at number six, but has now added 350 points to his ranking as a result of his run to the semifinals at this tournament. Thus, he has closed the gap between him and Russian world number five Daniil Medvedev to just 795 points.
