PAOK SUFFER MAIDEN HOME DEFEAT SINCE 2017

The proud unbeaten run at the Toumba Stadium is over. On Sunday evening, PAOK conceded their maiden home defeat of the 2019/2020 Super League season, as an own goal from Dimitris Giannoulis at the start of the second half gifted Olympiacos a vital 1-0 triumph. Olympiacos now boast a commanding five-point lead over reigning champions PAOK in first position of the standings.

This marked PAOK’s first home defeat in the domestic championship since 31 May 2017, when Panathinaikos claimed a dramatic 3-2 triumph in the Super League playoffs. After that game, PAOK were unbeaten in 40 successive home matches in Thessaloniki, earning 37 wins and three draws before Olympiacos won on Sunday. This statistic does not include the two games against AEK and Olympiacos in the 2017/2018 campaign which were abandoned.

OLYMPIACOS UNDEFEATED IN 35

Olympiacos are eager to become the second consecutive team to become champions of Greece without conceding a single defeat. So far, the Erythrolefki are yet to suffer a loss this season in the league, claiming 19 victories and six draws in 25 matches. One round remains in the regular season before the championship playoffs begin.

Overall, if we take last season into account, Olympiacos are now undefeated in 35 Super League games in a row. Their most recent defeat in the championship was conceded on 10 February 2019 against PAOK (1-3).

In those 35 matches, the Piraeus-based giants have scored 82 goals, while only conceding 14 at the other end. Olympiacos will expect to extend the streak to 36 games against lowly Panetolikos at the Karaiskakis Stadium next week.

PANATHINAIKOS CONTINUE EARNING PENALTIES

In Tripoli, Panathinaikos came unstuck against Asteras, conceding a late equaliser to draw 1-1 after Ghayas Zahid had received a second yellow card. Italian striker Federico Macheda had earlier given the Prasini the lead from the penalty spot.

Incredibly, the Athenians have earned 15 penalties in 25 Super League matches in the current season, matching their previous record which was achieved in the 1990/1991 campaign. Three of the 15 penalties have been missed.

Panathinaikos, occupying fourth position, currently trail third-placed AEK by nine points.
