On Tuesday, Volos released this following statement:
“Volos NFC announces the end of its cooperation with Alberto Gallego, thanking him for his contribution to the team and wishing him every success for his career. His former assistant, Stefanos Xirofotos, replaces him as head coach.”
Gallego, 45, replaced Juan Ferrando at the Volos helm in January after the latter was forced to step down amid health problems. However, he failed to steer the club into the Super League championship playoffs, notably only winning one of the last seven games.
Volos most recently drew 0-0 against AE Larissa at home on matchday 25.
With one round remaining in the regular season, Volos sit in 12th position, 10 points ahead of 13th-placed Panetolikos. Volos will participate in the relegation playouts.
