Losses for Trikala, Ionikos; Wins for Veria and Ierapetra

Both Trikala and Ionikos suffered defeats over the weekend in the Football League, while Veria and Ierapetra boosted their hopes for promotion with victories over Thesprotos and Aspropyrgos, respectively.

Leaders Trikala dropped points for a second consecutive match as they fell 1-0 on the road to Egaleo. The game’s only goal was scored in the 61st minute through Farinola as he gave his side a valuable three points in their fight to avoid the drop. Egaleo now sit in tenth place with 24 points, one point clear of the drop zone, while Trikala remain top of the table with a three-point cushion over second-placed Ionikos. 

Ionikos were also on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline as Diagoras Rodou defeated them on Saturday. Pastarouhas’ 60th-minute marker separated the sides at the final whistle, succumbing Ionikos to their third road defeat in five outings. Despite the loss, Ionikos remain three points behind leaders Trikala while Veria and Ierapetra inched within three points of the Nikaia side. Diagoras sit in seventh with 32 points. 

Veria recorded a big away win over Thesprotos with an entertaining 2-4 scoreline. A four-goal first half ended even as Pasas (2) and Marangos (12) gave the visitors an early lead before two late goals in the half from Kollas (42, 45+2) saw the teams go into half-time level at 2-2. However, Veria restored their lead in the 72nd minute through Mletsas before Simoni sealed victory for the visitors in second-half stoppage time. The result moves Veria (tied with Ierapetra) within three points of Ionikos while Thesprotos are tied for ninth with Egaleo on 24 points. 

Ierapetra, who sit tied on points with Veria, kept their promotion hopes alive with a 1-0 win at home over Aspropyrgos. The game’s only goal was scored in the 71st minute by Katsikokeris. Aspropyrgos remain in the relegation zone in 12th place with 20 points.

Saturday’s Volos derby between Olympiacos Volou and Niki Volou ended in a 1-1 draw as the two teams shared the points. Niki Volou took the lead in the eighth minute through Rojano’s penalty to silence the home crowd. In what was a heated match, the visitors held their lead up until second-half stoppage time when Tsiaras netted home the equalizer for Olympiacos Volou. Both teams ended the game with ten-men as Niki Volou’s scorer, Rojano was sent off in the 81st minute with a straight red card while the hosts saw Koutsianikoulis sent off with a second yellow card offense in the 89th minute. The result is a poor one for promotion-hunting Niki Volou, who dropped to fifth place with Kavala on 33 points while Olympiacos Volou are eighth with 31 points.

In other action, Ialysos recorded a vital 0-2 win on the road over Triglia in their fight to avoid the drop while Kavala celebrated a narrow 0-1 victory away to Kalamata.
