Deputy Minister of Culture and Sport, Lefteris Avgenakis, confirmed that Super League teams can return to training from May 5 when speaking at a press-conference last week. However, there was no mention of the Super League 2 and Football League, the second and third tiers of Greek football respectively. It’s already been confirmed by the Hellenic Football Federation that the 2019/2020 Gamma Ethniki season has permanently ended.

The Super League playoffs and playouts are expected to begin in June. On the other hand, however, the future of the Super League 2 and Football League remains very much up in the air. Winners of the eight Gamma Ethniki groups have even called for the two leagues in question to be merged together.

On Monday, the Board of Directors of both the Super League 2 and Football League participated in a video conference, after which they released statements confirming that they will push for a training resumption.

The formal requests will be sent to Avgenakis. The Football League statement also confirmed that the organisation will be ready to stage matches again if the season is allowed to resume.

Nevertheless, according to information from Sport FM, teams are likely to refuse to resume the championship because of financial reasons. The vast majority of clubs in the two divisions do not have enough money to stage games behind closed doors in accordance with the new hygiene rules.
