Super League 2 to hold important calls concerning season resumption

The Super League 2 organisation will hold crunch conference calls with the Deputy Minister of Culture and Sport, Lefteris Avgenakis, and the Panhellenic Professional Football Players Association (PSAP) concerning the resumption of the 2019/2020 campaign.

As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the Super League 2 season was suspended during the first half of March, but the state is expected to allow teams to begin training again in early May. Twenty rounds of the 2019/2020 regular season were held before play was halted.

The Super League is predicted to return in June.

On Thursday, the Super League 2 Board of Directors held an online call with representatives of the 12 participating clubs, but only Doxa Drama openly expressed its desire for the campaign to resume and be successfully completed. All organisations spoke about their worries concerning players’ health and contracts.

Reports have also stated that the financial crisis will have a big impact on Super League 2 teams, which weren’t exactly rich in the first place. No revenue will be generated from matchdays with all remaining games of the season predicted to be played behind closed doors.

With the future of the championship somewhat up in the air, a conference call will take place on Tuesday between the Super League 2 working group and Avgenakis, before a meeting with the PSAP is staged later on. The PSAP is yet to respond to the request for a discussion.

President of the Super League 2, Leonidas Leoutsakos, set up the working group last week with Apollon Smyrnis, PAS Giannina, Levadiakos, FC Chania, Trikala, and Ialysos.

At the time of suspension, PAS Giannina held a comfortable lead in first position of the standings, with Apollon Smyrnis trailing the Ioannina-based club by seven points. Apollon Smyrnis are only four points ahead of Chania and Levadiakos in the race for a shot at promotion.

The winners of the Super League 2 are due to earn direct promotion to the top tier. The team in second position will compete in a promotion/relegation playoff against the 13th-placed Super League side.
