Even as some countries edge toward ending their lockdowns and as football attempts to find the proper way and time to resume, the Coronavirus pandemic has wreaked havoc on the game’s football schedule this season and beyond. In a move prompted by the postponement of Euro 2020, UEFA, the European football governing body, has decided to also delay the Women’s Euro 2021 tournament until 2022.

The tournament will still be hosted by England and use the same venues and stadiums. It will now run from July 6th-31st, 2022.

In a statement released by the organization, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said, “When we had to take an urgent decision on the postponement of UEFA EURO 2020, we always had the impact on UEFA Women’s EURO 2021 in mind. We have carefully considered all options, with our commitment to the growth of women’s football at the forefront of our thinking. By moving UEFA Women’s EURO to the following year, we are ensuring that our flagship women’s competition will be the only major football tournament of the summer, providing it with the spotlight it deserves.”

Qualification for the competition will continue on dates to be determined. The Greek Women’s National Team have four matches remaining in their Group I qualifying campaign. The Ethniki are third in that section on four points, behind leaders Ireland (13 points/five matches) and Germany (12 points/four matches). While the Greek side is unlikely to make up the ground on the top two in the four games that remain, the displays thus far have been impressive. The hope is that valuable experience can be gained in the last few matches against the likes of Germany, Ukraine, and Montenegro.
