10. ACHIEVEMENTS BY TRACK AND FIELD AND ROWING YOUNGSTERS

In rowing, Greece won three medals (two silver and one bronze) at the European Junior Championships, four medals (two gold, one silver, and one bronze) at the World U23 Championships, and seven medals (three gold, two silver, and two bronze) at the European U23 Championships. It should be noted that many of the athletes winning medals for Greece at both the World and European U23 Championships were teenagers, some even as young as 16 and 17. Leading the way were Christina Bourmpou and the Kyridou sisters (Anneta and Maria), as the girls from Thessaloniki won gold medals at both the World U23 Championships and the European U23 Championships in 2019. Bourmpou and Maria Kyridou also qualified for the 2020 Olympics in the women’s pair, and the teenagers will likely be the youngest crew in Tokyo.

9. OLYMPIACOS REACH EUROPA LEAGUE KNOCKOUT STAGES

Olympiacos marched on to the UEFA Europa League knockout stages in dramatic fashion after defeating Red Star Belgrade 1-0 on the final matchday of UEFA Champions League group stage action. After a dominant display by the Greeks, It was an 87th-minute El Arabi penalty that gave Olympiacos the valuable victory. Despite being placed in an extremely tough group, Olympiacos finished in third place with four points, ahead of Red Star (three points), and behind Bayern Munich (18 points) and Tottenham (10 points). Despite that, Stefanidi came back strong in the summer outdoor season. She won a gold for Greece at the European Team Championships, and won the Diamond League for the fourth consecutive year. She then won bronze at the World Championships in Qatar, in what was regarded as the best women’s pole vault competition ever.

3. INVINCIBLE PAOK FC WIN HISTORIC DOUBLE

PAOK FC made history in 2019 by winning their first league title since 1985, and their third overall. The Dikefalos tou Vorra became just the second team ever in the Greek First Division to win the league title without tasting a single defeat. Panathinaikos first achieved this feat during the 1963/1964 season. PAOK finished the 2018/19 Super League campaign with 26 wins and four losses from their 30 games.

In addition, they won the Greek Cup for the third year in a row, and for the seventh time overall. It was a repeat of the 2017 and 2018 finals as PAOK and AEK clashed in the showpiece event yet again. A goal in first-half stoppage time from PAOK’s Chuba Akpom separated the sides at the final whistle. This was the first time in the Thessaloniki club’s history that they won the domestic double.
