The final revenue distribution figures for the 2018/2019 season of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League have been published by the governing body, with AEK, Olympiacos, and PAOK all receiving a share of the revenue.

AEK, who progressed from the third qualifying round before reaching the group stage for the first time since the 2006/2007 season, received the most revenue out of all the Greek clubs with a total compensation of just over €18.9m.

The majority of that compensation came from AEK’s participation in the group stage, which totalled €14.5m after the club dispatched Celtic and Hungary’s Vidi FC en route to the competition proper. AEK’s total compensation also includes just under €2.7m from TV rights and a further €1.1m for the club’s coefficient over the past decade.

AEK’s miserable campaign in the group stage saw the club earn no performance-based incentives as six defeats out of six cost the club from padding its total haul.

Out of the 32 teams to compete in the group stage, AEK took home the least revenue where by comparison Spanish giants Barcelona received a whopping €117.7m in compensation thanks to the second largest TV deal in the competition and strong coefficient ranking over the past decade. Eventual champions Liverpool received just north of €111m by comparison, making the English club along with Barcelona the only two sides to crack the €100m mark.

Missed opportunity comes at a price for PAOK

Despite starting their campaign in the qualifying rounds of the Champions League, PAOK’s eventual elimination from the competition by Benfica in the playoff round came at a massive price for the Thessaloniki club.

At a little more than €14.1m, PAOK’s overall compensation totals less than what the club would have earned with passage to the Champions League group stage. Instead, PAOK’s elimination from the Champions League left the Thessaloniki side with a purse of €5m from the Champions League while also receiving a little more than €9.1m from reaching the Europa League group stage last season.

An equally disappointing run in the Europa League which saw PAOK tumble out of the competition with a rock-bottom finish in their group saw PAOK cap-out in performance-based incentives at €622,000.

In addition to the Champions League revenue, PAOK’s total compensation also includes just north of €3.6m for TV rights and €2m for the club’s coefficient over the past decade.

Olympiacos reap rewards despite Champions League absence

After their finish to the 2017/2018 Super League confirmed the club would miss out on Champions League group stage for the second time in three years, Olympiacos’ European campaign last term was limited to the Europa League.

Olympiacos’ run to the Round of 32 netted the club just over €12.5m in compensation for the 2018/2019 season, with €2.75m based on the club reaching the group stage after aggregate wins over FC Luzern and Premier League outfit Burnley.

A further €2.5m came courtesy of Olympiacos’ performances in the group stage as the Erythrolefki collected three wins and two draws, with the most memorable of those results coming on the final day of group stage action courtesy of a 3-1 defeat of AC Milan in Piraeus.

By advancing to the Round of 32, Olympiacos earned €500,000 but missed out on a further €1.1m after being bounced from the competition by Ukrainain side Dynamo Kyiv 3-2 on aggregate.

The Erythrolefki received a lion’s share of more than €3.7m for the Greek market TV deal while the club’s performances in Europe over the past decade accounted for a further €2.9m in compensation.

Eventual Europa League winners, Chelsea, netted just over €46.3m after triumphing over local rivals Arsenal in the Final in Baku -- the highest compensation of any club in the competition last season.
