Volos NFC extend lead with dramatic triumph over Kerkyra

Volos NFC extended their lead at the top of the 2018/2019 Football League standings, defeating AOK Kerkyra 2:1 at home.

Kerkyra initially took the lead in the second half, however Volos NFC responded with two goals in the final eight minutes to snatch a 2:1 victory which extends their advantage over Apollon Larissa in first place to eight points, while Kerkyra are 11 points behind in fifth position.
The hosts began well in the first half and boasted the initiative. Two long range attempts forced the Kerkyra goalkeeper into a couple of tricky saves, and on 33 minutes, the hosts failed to take advantage of a clear chance when clean through. Kerkyra were struggling to create, but with the half approaching its conclusion, a strong effort outside of the area drew an alert save from Volos goaltender Fotis Karagiolidis, and the same player then denied Brazilian forward Thuram at point blank range.
Volos continued playing on the front foot, but midway through the second half, Kerkyra were gifted a penalty after a clumsy challenge and Alexandros Kontos calmly dispatched the resulting spot kick. With Volos throwing bodies forward to equalise, promising opportunities appeared for Kerkyra on the counterattack, however Thuram just failed to connect with a floating cross from Panagiotis Zorbas as the goal gaped.
It was looking as though Kerkyra would hold on to a precious win, but with eight minutes remaining, Volos NFC midfielder Marcelo Penta fired a wonderful volley beyond the flailing goalkeeper. Playing with the momentum, the home team promptly grabbed a dramatic winning goal with a mere 120 seconds left on the clock, as Vasilis Mantzis received the ball in the box, twisted past the static Kerkyra defence and whipped a clever shot into the far left corner.
Volos have 28 points from 10 Football League matches, scoring 26 goals in the process and conceding just five. Kerkyra own 17 points in 10 games.
