Panathinaikos Basketball owner, Dimitris Giannakopoulos, has further light into his plans for possible new venues for the Panathinaikos’ Football Club. The fiery son of Pavlos Giannakopoulos has long been linked with leading the construction of a new stadium, particularly the ambitious “PAO Alive” Project, which would house both the football and basketball departments, but needed Government backing.

After approximately two months of silence (the last time Giannakopoulos publicly spoke was in early December 2019), he has released more information following his meeting with the Attiki Regional Governor, Giorgos Patoulis. The meeting reportedly took place in a good climate, and interestingly, a redevelopment of Leoforos was discussed, in which Patoulis is in full support of. This would come in the form of improving the facilities for the Amateur Department of Panathinaikos (in which Giannakopoulos oversees) and possibly upgrading the football pitch.

The politician also threw his full support behind the construction of a new home at Votanikos. He has requested more information from the relevant technical services of the region and stated that the “Panathinaikos world has struggled unfairly for so many years. Together the State, Regional Municipality, and stakeholders have to contribute to the implementation of a flagship project that will mark the restart of two important historical sites in Athens.”

Giannakopoulos, also a stakeholder in the Votanikos project, will shed more light on the burning issues. Still, it is not unknown as to whether or not the news will be positive or negative.

It is known that government approval and support will be required to begin the commencement of either project. At the moment, it is a ‘waiting game,’ and the Panathinaikos world awaits to hear what will happen next.
