Italians to the rescue for APOEL

APOEL have turned to two Italians to fill the sporting director and head coaching positions after a shaky start to the 2018/19 season. Domenico Teti will serve as the club’s sporting director while Paolo Tramezzani will sit as APOEL’s manager.

Teti was chosen to fulfill a position that seeks to improve many off the field matters after the club’s failure to successfully help the squad with transfers in the summer. Teti will not only be responsible for the first team, but will also oversee the team’s academies.

The 42 year old started his career at AC Pro Sesto (2003-2005) and then served at the development department of Hellas Verona FC from 2005 to 2007. The next four years, he was the Technical Director of FC Lugano in Switzerland, before returning to Italy and UC Sampdoria from 2011 to 2013. The last four years, he was the Sporting Director of Novara Calcio.

Teti also holds a Law degree, a Master’s in Sport Organization, as well as a professional diploma of Sporting Director from Coverciano, the specialized school of the Italian Football Federation, which is considered the best in its field. Danielle Ranzato will serve as Technical Coordinator. Ranzato worked as an academy coach at AC Padova (1995-1997), AC Venezia (1998-2001), AC Hellas Verona (2003-2006), AC Mezzocorona (2010 – 2011), he was the assistant coach at FC Lugano (2007-2010), scouting director at Sampdoria (2011-2014), and Technical Coordinator at Novara Calcio (2014-2018).

The new sporting director worked quickly to bring in a permanent manager, choosing another Italian in the form of Paolo Tramezzani. Tramezzani will take over for interim coach, Giorgos Kostis, who will remain on the coaching staff.

The 48 year old does not carry a lot of experience, having served as a manager only twice in his career. He was an assistant coach for the Albanian national team from 2011 to 2016, took over FC Lugano for the 2016-2017 season, and then moved to FC Sion until October 2017. The head coaching position at APOEL will surely be the biggest challenge of Tramezzani’s career.

His assistant coach will be his compatriot, Pasquale Rocco, who previously worked at Gubbio U19, Perugia, and Bari. Tramezzani took over immediately during the international break in order to have extra time to work with his new team, while his first game will be against league leaders, AEL Limassol.
