24-year old Vlachodimos, who was born in Stuttgart and represented all of Germany’s youth national teams up to under 21 level, has attracted attention with his superb performances in recent weeks. Since transferring to Benfica from Panathinaikos this summer, Vlachodimos has started making waves, becoming the Portuguese club’s number one between the sticks. In the UEFA Champions League, he inspired Benfica to victories over Greek clubs PAOK and AEK, pulling off a number of top saves in the process.

In an interview before Friday’s UEFA Nations League match against Hungary, Greek national team boss Michael Skibbe revealed that Vlachodimos stated his desire to play for the Ethniki Omada and it’s now up to FIFA and UEFA to grant permission.

Yesterday evening, reports appeared in the media suggesting that Vlachodimos has officially informed the EPO of his decision to play for Greece as a senior international. He had a choice whether to represent either the German or Greek national team, but after weighing up his options, the Benfica star made the commitment to compete for the country of his family heritage.

Taking into account that the goalkeeper lived in Greece for two years when a Panathinaikos player and never received a call-up to the senior German national team, it’s expected that the governing bodies won’t reject the EPO’s request. So far, Vlachodimos has made 13 competitive appearances for Benfica in the 2018/2019 season, conceding 12 goals and recording five clean sheets.
